The Founding of AQL
AQL was established in 1998 in Leeds by Adam Beaumont, a businessperson and university professor. Initially, the company operated as a domain registrar, offering email and web hosting services. By 2003, AQL had expanded its offerings to include UK telephone numbers for broadband services, enabling IP telephony. Through AQL, users could exchange mobile messages both domestically and internationally. Notably, the company now manages 94 million numbers across 42 telecommunications networks worldwide.
Company Growth
In 2009, Adam Beaumont acquired Chapel, a Grade II listed building, and transformed it into AQL’s headquarters. The renovated site now houses two data centers, exhibition spaces, and a conference hall. By 2013, AQL’s annual turnover had reached £7 million, supported by a workforce of approximately 40 employees. The company also invested £43 million into a new data center on the former Yorkshire Chemicals site.
In 2015, AQL acquired the former Leeds City Council building for £500,000, converting it into another data center. This year also saw the acquisition of BlueWave Communications on the Isle of Man. By 2017, AQL had secured a framework contract to provide secure data storage for universities and colleges across the UK. In 2018, the company unveiled its first autonomous vehicle project.
Other Notable Projects
AQL’s history is marked by continuous innovation and community-oriented initiatives. In 2011, AQL established Leeds’ independent internet exchange, IXLeeds, at its headquarters, bolstering the city’s digital infrastructure.
In 2013, the company embarked on a unique project to refurbish 24 traditional red telephone booths in Leeds. These iconic booths were repurposed as solar-powered Wi-Fi hotspots, strategically placed across the city center.
AQL has consistently supported Leeds in various ways. In 2000, the company sponsored a live webcam streaming footage of Millennium Square. By 2017, AQL had become the communications sponsor for the Lendy Cowes Week sailing event and financially backed Leeds’ bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2023.
